Types of soldering irons and methods of use

Electric soldering iron is a necessary tool for electronic production and electrical maintenance. Its main purpose is to solder components and wires, that is, to heat the clean surface of the weldment and the solder to a certain temperature, so that the solder will melt, and the metal will diffuse on its interface and form a bonding layer. So as to realize the welding of metal.

The commonly used electric soldering irons are mainly as follows:

   1.  Externally heated electric soldering iron: consists of soldering iron tip, soldering iron core, shell, wooden handle, power lead, plug and other parts. Since the soldering iron core is installed on the outside of the soldering iron tip, it is called an externally heated electric soldering iron.

  2. Internally heated electric soldering iron: consists of handle, connecting rod, spring clip, soldering iron core, and soldering iron tip. Since the soldering iron core is installed inside the soldering iron tip, it generates heat quickly and has a high heat utilization rate. Therefore, it is called an internally heated electric soldering iron.

 3. Constant temperature electric soldering iron: Use the magnetic control switch inside the electric soldering iron to control the heating circuit of the soldering iron to keep the soldering iron head at a constant temperature. Suitable for components whose welding temperature should not be too high and welding time should not be too long.

  4. Suction gun/pen: It is a desoldering tool that integrates a piston-type tin suction device and an electric soldering iron. It has the characteristics of easy operation, flexibility, and wide application range.

The method of use is as follows:

1. Preparation: The soldering iron tip is required to be kept clean, free of oxides such as solder slag, and a layer of solder is plated on the surface. The components should also be tin-plated, and the soldering parts should be clean and free of oxidation.

 2. Heating the weldment: The electric soldering iron should be fully preheated before welding. To eat tin on the edge of the soldering iron tip, bring a certain amount of solder.

 3. Soldering: Place the tip of the soldering iron against the solder joint. The soldering iron is at an angle of about 60°C with the horizontal. So that the molten tin flows from the tip of the soldering iron to the solder joints. The time that the soldering iron tip stays at the solder joint is controlled within 2 to 3 seconds.

   4. Finish welding: Lift the tip of the soldering iron. The left hand still holds the component. After the tin at the solder joint has cooled and solidified, the left hand can be released. Rotate the lead with tweezers to confirm that it is not loose, and then cut off the excess lead with pliers.

Different types of soldering irons have different usage methods. The above is for reference only. For specific usage methods, please refer to the product manual or consult the manufacturer.
