Calculation method of thermal expansion of mold parts

The total length of the insert made in the machining room at 20°C is 30.52mm. When the temperature of the insert is raised to 150°C, how much has the conductive dimension changed due to thermal expansion?

In addition, the material of this insert is pre-hardened steel of SCM440 series.

Answer the question

Let’s put the corresponding value into the formula to take a look

α: Linear expansion coefficient of metal (mm/mm)

α=11.5×10-6 mm/mm

L 0=30.52mm

t=20℃

t0=150℃

Therefore, λ=11.5×10-6×30.52×(150-20)=0.0456 (mm).
